Departure Day minus 5

I've hunted high and low for some kind of checklist for visiting the Malaysia and China campuses but to no avail. So, for my benefit as much as anyone else's, I've listed below some of the things I've had to think about or have been recommended by colleagues:

  • Flights (always helpful if travelling further than Chipping Norton)
  • Accommodation in Kuala Lumpur and Ningbo
  • Transfers (lots of)
  • Return coach to Heathrow plus overnight accommodation
  • Vaccinations (limited to Diphtheria/Tetanus/Polio and Hepatitis A/Typhoid)
  • Local currency (I've ordered £100 of each, which should pay for a few beers)
  • Medication (lots of - just in case) and First Aid kit!
  • Tropical strength insect repellent (with DEET)
  • Passport with at least 6 months left before it expires
  • Socket adapters (the 'intercontinental' or 'trans-world' variety)
  • Notify the banks with which I have credit and debit cards
  • Cancel a blood donation session booked for 9th June
  • Buy clothing suited to a hot and humid climate (speedos?)
  • Get all the work stuff done I need to finish before I go
  • Learn Mandarin (unlikely)
  • Download Google Translate (much more likely)
  • Not forgetting a visa for China (I'm still waiting by the way)
  • Lots more besides

Finally, I learned a useful phrase this afternoon: phonetically, 'noddinghan dashway' is Mandarin for 'nottingham university', which could come in handy if I manage to get lost. Thanks for the advice Gill but if it turns out to mean something different......!
